CLC Secure Badge

Increased Online Protection for CLC Firms and their Clients

All conveyancers are acutely aware of the risks that fraud poses to both their clients and their businesses. Criminals may attempt to impersonate firms through various channels, including websites, email communications, and telephone calls.

The CLC Secure Badge has been developed to significantly mitigate the risk of online impersonation, particularly through cloned or fraudulent websites. It also serves as a tool to help detect and deter fraudsters attempting to create fake firms that falsely claim regulation by the CLC.

By displaying the Secure Badge, firms provide consumers with clear assurance that the website they are engaging with belongs to a legitimate, CLC-regulated practice.

How it Works

The CLC issues each regulated firm with a unique piece of code that enables the display of the CLC Secure Badge on the firm’s website. This badge serves as a digital assurance of the firm’s regulated status. The CLC actively monitors the use of each firm’s unique code to detect and prevent any unauthorised use of the Secure Badge.

Once installed, the CLC Smart Badge allows website visitors to click on the badge and receive real-time confirmation of the firm's regulatory status via the CLC’s official website.

In addition to monitoring badge usage, the CLC conducts routine scans across the internet to identify any potential misuse of a firm's unique Secure Badge—providing an added layer of protection and peace of mind.

CLC Practice Trading Names

If a practice operates under a trading name and maintains a dedicated website for that trading name, the CLC Secure Badge must be clearly displayed on that website. The badge should be visible on all websites associated with trading names under the CLC-regulated entity. This ensures consumers can confidently verify that the website is legitimately operated by a CLC-regulated firm.

How to Install

To obtain the CLC Secure Badge Installation Guide, the practice should contact the Licensing Team at licensing@clc-uk.org.

The installation guide includes step-by-step instructions, along with the HTML code required to embed the CLC Smart Badge into the practice website.

Follow the instructions provided in the guide to install the CLC Secure Badge on your website.

The Secure Badge must be installed on the homepage of the practice’s website or in a location that is clearly visible and easily accessible to the public.

Once installed correctly the secure badge should appear as below with todays date in the top right corner:

Once the badge has been installed, contact the Licensing Team at licensing@clc-uk.org to request activation.

Please provide the following information in your email:

  1. Practice Name
  2. Practice CLC ID
  3. Practice Website URL
  4. Whether this is the main practice website or in relation to a trading name of the practice

The CLC will provide confirmation to the practice once the Secure Badge has been activated.

Troubleshooting and Support

Before proceeding, ensure that the CLC Smart Badge code is not added to development or testing environments, as the badge will function correctly only when published on an authorised, live website.

If you are confident that you are installing the Smart Badge on the correct website, please contact the CLC at licensing@clc-uk.org to have the domain added to the list of authorised websites.

If your business operates multiple domains—such as both .com and .co.uk—each domain must be individually registered and approved by the CLC to enable proper functionality of the Smart Badge.

Yes, the CLC Smart Badge is fully responsive and will work with all website builders that can add HTML.

Our JavaScript library includes a small snippet of tracking code designed solely to support our internal reporting functions.

Please note that we do not collect or track any personal or behavioural data, such as website traffic, IP addresses, or user navigation patterns.

The only information recorded is as follows:

  • Websites that have implemented the Smart Badge code – This allows us to monitor adoption among regulated firms and to prevent unauthorised or illegal use of the Smart Badge.
  • Number of Smart Badge clicks – This data helps the secure badge provider manage system bandwidth and provides insight into the visibility and effectiveness of the badge.

The information collected is strictly limited to the purposes stated above and is shared only between the CLC and the Secure Badge provider.
